On Monday, we had a bubbles presentation and learned all about the science of bubbles! Students had engaging discussions about how bubbles are made and what a bubble needs to last. Not only did students talk about bubbles, they experienced bubbles as well! Bubbles are always more exciting when you get to blow them inside the classroom. What a great program organized by the PTO. After our presentation, we completed bubble math with a partner. Students worked to find pairs of numbers that equal ten and then POP them by coloring them in! Thank you to Nora, Logan, and Colin for being our authors this week. We enjoyed hearing all about your vacations! Happy Earth Day! We have been celebrating Earth Day all week. Students have loved thinking about how they can reduce, reuse, and recycle. They also completed two Earth Day projects. I am so impressed with their Earth paintings. They made their circles, hearts, and land/water shapes all by themselves! We even brought Earth Day into math! We continued working on using base ten blocks to represent numbers. We are getting much better at exchanging our ones for a group of ten. Our literacy work this week became some science work in the afternoon as well! Students learned all about Jane Goodall and the amazing work she has done. They were quite interested to see what she looked like when she began working, and what she looks like now as an adult.

In ELA this week, we were working on reading and responding to text. We had some outstanding conversations surrounding our texts this week. We were thrilled to see students' comprehension and the level of engagement and thoughtfulness that went into student responses. In math this week, we were completing some tricky tasks! We played "Race to a Flat" working with base 10 blocks to compose and decompose numbers. It was a definite challenge, so we will continue to work on this skill after vacation. Students are working hard to use multiple strategies to solve addition and subtraction number stories. We are searching for key words and terms to help determine whether we are adding or subtracting. We love partner work in K! We played disappearing train with partners to work on our subtraction. It's always fun while we're able to learn when we are playing games! We love our 4K buddies!! We worked so hard and met our buddies quite a few times to practice singing Here Comes the Sun. It's always so refreshing to see our buddies working together to support one another. Thank you KR and 4K for helping us get ready for spring...and thank you Mrs. Finnerty for recording the performance so the class could watch themselves on the smartboard. They were so proud to see themselves!! We had a fun Friday! Our 4K buddies joined us for indoor recess. We also had some HPS seniors join us for a day of community service...including Mrs. Finnerty's daughter, Julia! This week, we have certainly begun with April showers. Keeping fingers crossed that these showers really will bring May flowers! This week, our Author's Chair presenters were Lucas, Thomas, and Bella. There was a definite theme of spring and egg hunts. Thanks for sharing your writing with us! In ELA this week, the book Not a Box was a bit hit. Many students had read the book at home as well which was nice to hear! At centers, students were able to create their own "Not a Box" sentence and illustration. I was impressed with the unique ideas students thought of. In math this week, students worked on addition and Mrs. Finnerty worked on 3D shapes. They were so excited to explore our 3D shape manipulatives. They had thoughtful conversations about which shapes would roll, slide, and stack. Students also practiced building and drawing 2 and 3D shapes with toothpicks and playdough. In the afternoon, students have been thinking about the start of Spring and new growth. Students made these fabulous hatching chicks!
Hi All, it is so wonderful to be back in K, and I have been in a state of awe at how far everyone has come since November. This week, I witnessed some outstanding readers and writers who were SO much more independent. In math, I was able to see that not only are we doing well with our addition facts - we can even subtract! Miss Listernick and Mrs. Finnerty were certainly busy giving all the students what they needed in my absence, and we are having a great time team teaching! This week was the perfect week to return because the students were working on a review week in literacy. This allowed me to see where students are with their skills and also experience how they are working in and around the classroom. I saw some outstanding writing and could not believe some of the text students were able to read! Student's independent work, creating their own silly sentences, pairs well with the writing and Sentence A Day work Miss Listernick is doing with students in the afternoon. One of my favorite parts of the week was on Tuesday when I saw the "Author's Chair" students have been doing with Miss Listernick. This week, Colin, Harper, and Ayla shared their writing with us and classmates asked them such thoughtful questions. What a great way to instill the importance of writing, feeling proud of our work, and supporting one another. In math this week, students were working on bead combinations of 10 and wow! I could not believe how many of the combinations students were able to generate on their own. We practiced writing and building the combinations as well as introducing "turn around" facts. Mrs. Finnerty played a fan favorite game called "Sum Swamp" with her groups where students were practicing math facts. Many students asked for the name of the game and wanted to play at home. It may be a game to keep in mind for a rainy day activity! On Thursday, we practicing sorting, counting, and graphing jelly beans. I was so impressed with students working to figure out their own information as everyone had their own group of beans to sort and graph. We focused our attention on learning all about the military this week. Students learned the branches of the military, different jobs service members hold, and ways the military keep our country safe. Next week, we will focus on learning all about military dogs and jobs they have in the service! Thank you so much to the many family members of the class who have served. We enjoyed students sharing all about their family members and what military jobs they hold. In literacy this week, we also focused on learning about Veterans Day. Students unscrambled a sentence. We thought about what makes up a sentence in order to help us figure out the order of the words. Mrs. Finnerty's group wrote in their journal about which job they would like to have in the military. In math, students worked on number stories. We had to listen to the story and think about what information was important in order to solve the problem. Wow! What a festive week in K! We began our week with pumpkin investigations. Thank you so much to our volunteers for assisting with the exploration as well as for the many who donated pumpkins and carving supplies! We learned all about the life cycle of the pumpkin and the parts of a pumpkin. We also worked on counting seeds by ones as well as making groups of tens. Students learned many fun facts about pumpkins in school this week, make sure to ask them what their favorite pumpkin fact of the week is :-) On Halloween, we enjoyed Halloween centers in the classroom. Thanks again to our volunteers who helped facilitate our groups. We hope you had just as much fun as our students did! Ms. St. Laurence came to visit us this week. She helped us discuss the listening tool. We also discussed the importance and difference between hearing and listening. Check out our "Franken Buddies." Students were great at listening and following directions when creating their very own monsters!
This week, we had more community helpers visiting us in K! We started the week with a visit to the Hingham fire station. Students had a phenomenal time checking out the trucks, gear, and station. When we returned to school, we did a listening activity and made our very own fire dogs! Dr. Richer from South Coastal Animal Hospital. She talked to us about what veterinarians do and the many types of veterinarians you can choose from. She brought a Vet Tech, and we were lucky to have Mrs. DeCourcey and Mrs. Herrlinger join us for Vet centers! In preparation of the Boo Bash tonight, the entire school enjoyed in our traditional Halloween parade. We were even joined by a couple of extra special guests on our parade. I'm sure you will be able to easily spot them! Wow! What an outstanding STEAM Week in K. We began our week with a Reptile Show in the cafeteria. Students could not believe they got to see and feel so many of the animals. Many warmed up to the idea of trying to touch them as they were a bit wide eyed when snakes started coming out! Each day, we completed a pumpkin STEAM activity. Our activities included: building pumpkin towers, building a gate that would hold our "Five Little Pumpkins," creating a 2D shape using pumpkin jellies and toothpicks, and today, we met our 4K big buddies and composed a 3D shape inspired by Spookly the Square Pumpkin! Pumpkin TowersFive Little Pumpkins2D ShapesBig BuddiesThis week, the math team joined us to introduce iReady on the iPads. We use iReady to collect data on student's math abilities. It presents to the students as a game. Now that they have completed the initial assessment, the program will adjust to meet each student's needs. In math this week, we worked on the concept of addition, and adding more to a group to create a higher number. Students enjoyed it and had fun learning about the plus and equal symbols. With Mrs. Finnerty, students sorted buttons, and worked on classifying objects and categorizing various groups. We are working on keeping track of our numbers, when counting. It can be tricky to remember all the numbers when counting a group of objects. In literacy this week, we worked on identifying the central topic of a story. We also introduced informational texts and how they differ from fiction. Ms. Pratt and Mrs. Cunio joined us for Motor Centers this week! In our journal writing this week, we were challenged to use a sentence starter that then complete the sentence on our own. Students had to produce an idea to write about and then think of all the sounds they heard in that word to begin making connections between letters having sounds, and how to use the sounds to create a word. Time flies in Kindergarten. We're already onto our second month of school. We have been working hard to learn classroom routines and expectations. Things are going well and we're seeing a great improvement with student's independence already. We began our week with lessons in the PRS garden. We learned about the life cycle of seeds which pairs well with the work we did about the life cycle of apples last week. We saved some sunflowers from the garden to dry out and we will replant the seeds in Spring. Ms. Pratt and Mrs. Cunio visited us for Motor Centers this week. We worked on some speech, fine, and gross motor activities. The class was so excited :-) In math this week, we worked on shapes, so on Friday, we made our very own triangles inspired by the book The Greedy Triangle! |
